Indie Publishing – Self Publishing Book Cover Design and Formatting
Not so long ago self publishing was considered the last resort for would-be authors who failed to secure an agent and sell their book. How things have changed.
Today with mainstream publishers producing consistently fewer titles, and new authors barely given a second glance, self-publishing is becoming common place. In today’s marketplace mainstream publishers are even looking to self-publishing book lists for their future authors – 50 Shades of Grey and The Martian being prime examples.
With systems such as Amazon’s KDP print-on-demand and ebooks it is easy to get your book out there. The Art of Communication can help you get your book ready for market by creating a cover that suits the genre and target audience and text pages that are formatted correctly for print or ebook. Our aim is always to create a book that can compete and looks like a mainstream product.
It’s not a faceless on-line process, but a collaboration where you, the author, can discuss your thoughts and we can produce a book that works and that you are happy with.
Why work with The Art of Communication?
Hi, I’m Christine Hammacott and I am an Indie-Author as well as graphic designer.
For over 20 years I’ve worked on promotional material for companies large and small through creative agencies across the UK. I have also worked as an in-house book designer for an Oxford publisher, so I understand the process well. In 2008 I started The Art of Communication graphic design consultancy and after being asked to design book covers for local authors I decided to add it as a wider service.
As an author I appreciate how daunting the process of publication can be so I do everything I can to walk you through the process and make it as easy as possible for you. I understand how precious your book is to you, it’s your baby, and as we work towards publication together I too want it to be the best it can be.
I will discuss the book in detail with you and ask for a synopsis, character and place descriptions, and the main themes of a book so that I have a clear idea of the content and where your book sits in the marketplace. I will work with you to get every detail right and create a cover that works but that you can be proud of. I will advise you but ultimately it’s your book – so you are in control.
Bespoke Book Covers
When an author spends countless hours writing their book, making sure that every word counts, why would they want to fall at the last hurdle? I want our authors to have every chance to sell their work so I spend the time creating individual covers that look professional, fit the genre and reflect the content and themes of a book – but at prices they can afford.
Well laid out content
Internal pages don’t need to be boring but they do need to be formatted correctly to the needs of the audience, whether that is an older or younger audience or with smaller type to get the page count down and make it cost-effective.
If you are looking for marketing materials such as business cards, postcards, bookmarks, pull up banners etc then I can help with those too, to give your promotional items a unified and professional feel.
I can also design and setup your author website using the WordPress, adding links to your social media and sales platform. It’s no problem if you are unfamiliar with purchasing domain names and setting up sites.

Things to consider when thinking about your book cover design
- What genre and sub genre is it in?
- Who is your target audience?
- What other authors are writing books like yours?
- What are the themes of your story?
- When is it set?
- What do your main characters or key places look like?
- Is it part of a series? Does it need to fit with other books you produced?
- Is it going to be a printed book and/or ebook?
- What does the printer need from you?
- What size are you going to produce printed copies at?
- Do you need imagery for your marketing?
- Where are you sourcing images from – what copyright and restrictions apply?
- What is your author brand going to be?
